Planning Old Salem family photos in Winston-Salem? The best photo spots on the brick streets, the best light, and what to know before your session in the historic district.

If you're planning Old Salem family photos, you're choosing the most unmistakably Winston-Salem backdrop there is. The brick streets, Moravian rooftops, heritage gardens and restored 18th-century buildings of Old Salem Museums & Gardens have looked like this for 250 years — which means your photos won't date.

The best spots. Start on Main Street: the cobblestone and brick sidewalks, the Winkler Bakery storefront, and the old trees make a natural walking route for a session. The heritage gardens behind the buildings give you greenery and old walls in one frame. The restored Moravian church and the square around it are the classic wide shot.

The best light. Early morning is the move — the brick streets are quiet before the district fills, and the low sun rakes across the old buildings. Golden hour along Main Street is the other window. Midday sun on pale brick can be harsh, so plan around it.

What to know. Old Salem is a living historic district, not just a park — there are visitors, events and occasional closures. Park at the Visitor Center lot or on surrounding streets. Weekday mornings are calmest. And because the setting is so distinctive, pick a photographer who's shot there before — the light on those streets has quirks.
